A project to create a unique number system from unexpected materials.

The shapes of these numbers each serve as half of another number. The forms switch through the power of servos connected to an Arduino.

This project was on display at the Resolution Show in 2017 alongside many other talented designer's works.

Process
Project Brief: Create a unique number system with unusual materials.
For this project, I wanted to create the number system by making the numbers automated/robotic. I wanted the shapes of the numbers to change or reveal the entire set in some new and interesting way and spent a lot of iterations finding how to make that happen.

Inspiration came from simplified number forms and splitting apart numbers. Finding similarities in different numbers made it feasible to change between the forms and still express all ten numbers.
The numbers took on a very modern/simplified vibe in order for them to express all ten numbers coherently. The background was meant to blend in with the wall, while the slightly opaque background gives a glimpse of the wiring for the servos and the blue of the numbers serves as a stark contrast.
